In Germany, just like the states, they eat three meals a day. For breakfast they generally have a spread of eggs, bread, cold meat, and cheese. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day. They generally have their hot dish like a casserole. Dinner consists of bread, deli meat, cheese, and sausage. The meals do differ throughout the different regions. In Southwest Germany the food is influenced heavily by the French. Some of their specialities are Riesling wine, spatzle, and sauerkraut. In the state of Bavaria the food is influenced by Austrian cooking. The two most popular foods are dumplings and pretzels. In the Northwest they are very close to the North Sea so they have a large variety of seafood. In Germany never assume you can use a credit card in the stores. Although there are supermarkets in the metro areas generally there is a limited selection of products. However there are separate shops, such as butcher markets and bakeries, to buy certain products.
My current shopping habits are going once a week to the store. My eating habits aren't the best. I try to eat fresh food but that does not always happen because it tends to be more expensive. If I went to Germany I would most certainly try new foods and adapt to their culture of doing things. I think this is the only way to completely soak in the whole experience.

  1. I agree! I do not know if I would like everything about their eating habits or food, but in order to experience the culture fully, I think being brave and trying the lifestyle and food would be a good thing to do.

  2. There was a lot of research done for this blog. The food actually sounds more interesting and I would definitely consider trying some of these German foods.
