Many of the classic fairy tales surprisingly came from the Brothers Grimm. They didn't necessarily make them up all by themselves, though. Some they collected when they heard others tell them. The original German versions were changed over time and Americanized to be fit to tell to children. Many of the stories that are told in German have a lot more gore than many of the American versions. The Americanized ones also have more magic and what we have come to think of as fairy tales. In the story Cinderella, there is no fairy godmother. Instead it is a wishing tree. Also in the German version of little red riding hood, the grandmother is actually eaten. This doesn't happen to my knowledge in the American version. Snow white is also different because in the German version there is no poisoned apple but other poisoned wares that Snow white has. It shows that the Germans want to scare their children whereas the Americans don't.
The story of old sultan is like the fox and the hound a little bit. They are both not supposed to be friends but they are despite the usual stigma between them. They are trying to teach that despite stigmas and looks, you can still be friends.Fairy tales are different from other stories because they use works like "once upon a time" at the beginning. Some fairy tales have magic and others are set in different places like a castle or a forest.

Fairy Tales
The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales are a bunch of fairy tales that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm made into a book. These fairytales may be similar to some of our American fairytales that say Disney puts out there but the Grimm fairytales are just that, Grim. While on the other end of the spectrum Disney Fairy tales are very tame and mostly have happy endings with little death as to keep the innocence of the children. There are settle differences in disney fairytales and grim brothers. One major difference between Disney’s Snow White is that instead of the evil step-mother just keeping the heart in a box she ate it instead. I was a little surprised because i grew up with the disney version. Another difference in Snow White is that when the queen was disguised as the old lady she uses a poison apple in the Disney version and a poison comb in the Grimm version. There are settle differences but overall the story is the same in both just with different details on each. Another popular tale in both countries is Cinderella. In the Grimm or old version of Cinderella, toes and heels are chopped off in order to fit the foot in the slipper and a bird warns the price every time they try to trick him, but you will not see that in the Disney version. Also in Cinderella, there is a magic tree on the her dead mothers grave that supplies presents instead of the disney fairy god mother i grew up with. Also the step sisters' eyes are not pecked out at the wedding. Another tale that is different is Little Red Riding Hood, in the American version people do not kill and cut open the wolfs stomach to save little red riding hood and her grandmother. The Grimm version of fairy tales may be more graphic and have serious parts but both Grimm Fairytales and Disney/ American fairy tales both take the reader to a fantasy land and in the end the reader learns a valuable lesson and gains many great memories, i used to love watching disney fairytales when i was a just a little guy.

Märchen aus Deutschland
Going all the way back to the 1800s, the Grimm Brothers began collecting and distributing old German fairy tales. Some of the common stories being snow white, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel. Because they collected all of these stories in one book, it allowed many people to have access and read them instead of just hearing them from memory. Such stories as the ones listed above were changed and altered to fit more of the child audience. Sexual and violent references were taken out and made more child friendly. For example, in the Grimm or old German version of Cinderella, toes and heels are chopped off in order to fit the foot in the slipper, but one does not see that in the Disney version. Also in Cinderella, the step sisters' eyes are not pecked out at the wedding. In the American Little Red Riding Hood, the little girl and grandmother do not tear open the wolf's stomach. If one were to read a majority of the Grimm fairy tales and compare to the American version, one would see that Americans try to shelter the violence and other horrid details of these tales from children. They do not want to frighten them. Americans want to teach their children the moral that comes with the story, but without all the excess violence that would give them nightmares for weeks. I read a story called The Grateful Beast; it talked about a man who has hardly any money but gives it away to help these animals that are being hurt. Towards the end, all the people and animals saved in the story are stuck in a situation out at sea, but all are happy to help because this man helped them, so they all work hard to survive and are granted a magical stone where they may wish for anything. They are then granted the palace and stables they asked for and live happily. This somewhat reminds me of Cinderella because she is forced to clean and work hard and does not have much to give, but does anyways, and because of this giving, she is granted a fairy godmother, in the American story, and all her wishes come true as she ends up in a beautiful palace with the man of her dreams. So, the morals match up in a sense that if one does the right thing and is always kind to others, no matter the circumstance, one shall be rewarded. One of the definitions of fairy tale is a story (as for children) involving fantastic forces and beings (as fairies, wizards, and goblins) —called also fairy story...resulting in a happy ending. I like this definition because this is what I have always thought of when the word fairy tale came up. I love the movie Tangled because it involves silly creatures, like an emotional chameleon, a magical flower and tons of fun adventures, ending in true love and happiness. I know it sounds typical because it has wild creatures, a magical force, and a happy ending, but that is what fairy tales are in my mind. I like the happy, not the scary.

Brudder Grim
Märchen aus Deutschland
The Brothers Grimm collected many fairytales that they wrote down, many of these stories include Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and many more. The early collections were never meant for children, so they have changed dramatically by Disney and other companies to sell to children. They all consist of happy endings, or are changed to be less violent and gruesome. The real stories also had deeper, underlying meanings, which mainly used scary or violent tactics to get the point across. The difference in German and American cultures is that America uses softer, less vivid descriptions to teach lessons to children, such as everybody can achieve their dreams and good always wins. The German stories use fear and violent images to teach get the point across.
The Twelve Brothers is a Grimm fairy tale I have never heard of before. In summary, it is about a King who has twelve sons, and his wife is pregnant again. He tells his sons that if the baby is a female, he will have all the sons killed. The baby born is a girl so all of the sons go into hiding, when the daughter gets older she learns of her brothers existences and she goes in search of them. She finds twelve enchanted flowers which turns her brothers into ravens, and she must not laugh or speak for seven years or they will stay that way forever. Her step-mother convinces the king to have her killed, but just as she is about to be burnt at the stake the seven years end and her brothers save her. The moral of the story is that siblings will always love each other, even if they do not know each other. I cannot think of any other fairy tales in America that have this lesson.
Many fairytales usually start with "once upon a time" and end with, "And they all lived happily ever after." They also take place in certain locations such as castles, forests or small towns. There is also at least one person who is genuinely good and caring in the midst of evil or ruthless people. Usually a character is royalty, and affects the main character in some way. Magic is also usually involved in the story at some point or another, could be the cause of the main problem in the whole story. These criteria fit my definition of a fairy tale, every story I can think of has these aspects in some way or another.

Marchen aus Deustchland
Brothers Grimm didn't write the fairy tales that they published in there book like popular belief but instead collected the 209 stories and put them into a book of fairy tales. Stories that came from this book are Rapunzel, Snow white, and red riding hood. The stories were originally more gory and to us they might seem less like children stories then the American versions are. Disney transformed the stories to fit our American culture of nice pleasant stories with nothing really "bad" happening in them, like death and bloody violence. The three main examples of this is first in Cinderella, when instead of the shoes not fitting and popping off of the step sisters feet like Disney shows, instead the step mother cuts off one of the step sisters toes so the shoe will fit and then the other step sisters heel. Another example is in Red riding hood when instead of the hunter stopping the eating of red riding hood by the wolf he actually cuts her out of the wolfs stomach. Also in the goldilocks American versions she escapes the bears unharmed but in the original she actually gets torn apart and eaten by the bears. The German versions were meant to scare kids more to teach them lessons and it shows in the German culture of kids not being as sheltered as American kids.
One German fairy tale that isn't a popular American fair tale is "Marienkind" which means Mary's Kid in English. In this fairy tale there is a poor family with a young daughter and one day the father was at work when the virgin Mary appeared. She gave the family rules to follow and if they obeyed she would help them. The little girl disobeyed the Virgin and for doing so she wasn't allowed to go to heaven. The lesson is to follow the rules or bad thinks will happen to you. I am not sure of an American fairy tale like this but it is similar to the store of Adam and Eve disobeying the word of God and being punished for such.
The definition of a fairy tale is a story involving fantastic forces, a story in which improbable events lead to a happy ending, and also a made up story usually designed to mislead. This definition sounds more like the American washed down versions of a fairy tale that are more romantic then lesson based. Usually a fairy tale consists of a far away land and has things like talking animals or creatures that aren't in real life. In most fairy tales German or American the story does usually have a good ending but in the German stories the way they get to the end isn't as pleasant as the American versions of the stories.

Food
Common foods for breakfast are bread, jams and butter, coffee and tea, yogurt, and cold cuts and cheese . Common foods for lunch are what Americans would normally eat for dinner, such as meat, vegetables, and potatoes. For dinner, it would be a smaller meal, consisting of breads, meats, cheeses, and a salad. At both lunch and dinner, alcohol might be provided. It was custom that lunch was the largest meal of the day, but that is slowly falling out of fashion, being replaced by dinner. When purchasing groceries, Germans go to the market nearly everyday. The food is fresh and because of this, European countries have smaller fridges. There are also less processed foods in Germany.
My eating habits are horrible, especially eating at Wege. They serve mostly starches and fatty meats that contain preservatives and the food isn't even good. Sometimes, if it's bad enough, I'm left to eating ice cream instead. Perhaps it wouldn't be as bad if I would exercise every once-in-a-while, but I'm really lazy. If I lived in Germany, I would have been raised in a society where health is maybe more valued? It can be hard to get fresh food in America.

Verkehrsmittel
Normally, I use my car as transportation. I walk to and from classes, and when going on vacation, I will take either a plane or a car. It's an estimate 8 minutes to get to school from my dorm room by walking. Germans very rarely use cars, or for that matter, have cars. They take daily trips to the store or market to pick up fresh foods such as bread. Other forms of transportation that are popular are subway, bus, bike, and train. In Germany, because cities are closer, this allows for public transportation to work more smoothly than it would in America. German cities also have smaller roads where cars would have a hard time driving through, and the price of gas in Europe is about twice as much in the US, leaving driving to no be cost efficient.
Food and Drinks
Food and drinks in Germany are very similar but in Germany the foods tend to be fresher. Germans walk to go get there foods fresh daily. When they go to the market they tend to buy less things due to the fact that they walk to and from the store and have to carry their things. Drinks are the same way but don't have to be fresh. Beer and wine are a major part of German culture. Also mineral water is also a main drink at meals. Germans don't eat as much processed foods as Americans due because they buy it fresh.
Food and drinks in America are mostly processed so that they last longer. There are fresh foods in America but people are more likely to buy processed foods because they are cheaper and last longer. Also Americans buy more groceries at a time because most Americans have cars to help transport these goods. Drinks very just as they do in Germany but many people drink pop and other processed drinks due to the fact that they taste good. Beer and wine are still a part of American culture but are not as big as in Germany.

Transportation
Transportation in Germany is very different that here in the U.S.. One of the biggest differences is that many people don't own cars due to how expensive it is to own one. Also everything most Germans need are within walking distance therefore they either take the bus, ride a bike, or walk. Another big difference is that in Germany they have the AutoBahn. This is the equivalent to a highway here in the U.S. but with no speed limits. You can go as fast as you want as long as you don't get in the way. There are also less crashes because people are more careful at these greater speeds.
Transportation in the U.S. is to us very normal. Speed limits and cars are a common thing. Every road and highway has a speed limit. Most families have at least one car. Same have as many as three or four. Also unlike in Germany most of us drive everywhere. Whether its just around the corner or just up the street most Americans will drive there. I know that sometimes I find myself doing that too. It wastes gas and doesn't allow me to get exercise. Driving is a big part in everyday life here in America where as in Germany it is not.

Wohnen in Deutschland
In Germany in particular it is most common for citizens to live in apartments. The country is small and has a high population. Germany is known for its historical and artistic architecture. Germany's limited space makes it hard for them to both afford and have room for multiple houses and cars. There are numerous lofts and appartments for the Germans.
Everything in the household is smaller than that of a common American household. They walk everywhere and there are less spacious places to live for large families. Although the small living spaces and the restricted living quality, Germans have flourished and made the best of the living in Germany.

Essen und Trinken
In Germany they eat small amounts of food for meals and they also eat fresher food. They shop every day for there food and here we usually don't shop every day but instead we shop like once a week and store our food in the freezer/fridge. In Germany they don't have big fridges like we do so that makes it even harder to store mass quantities of food. When Germans go shopping they usually go to markets that have fresher food and people in the US usually go to big super marts. Also, Germany eats healthier and eat in more. There food is fresher because Germans usually get fresh bread and meat every day from bakery's and butchers. The people in the US eat out more and eat cheaper more unhealthier food.
If I lived in Germany I would probably eat a little differently then I do here. I would be eating fresher foods and probably smaller quantities. I would also go shopping more in Germany because I would have to. That would be a lot different because here my family only shop once a week and that day is usually Sunday. I would also probably eat in more then I do here because that's what people usually do in Germany. It is a little more expensive to eat in more in Germany but I would be healthier.

Essen und Trinken
Germans for the most part eat three meals a day just like us. They tend to eat more organic food including many varieties of meats and cheese. How they go about oobtaining that food is much different. The most common way to get groceries is through the local supermarket. There is much less options when it comes to brands but there is usually a far greater selection of meats and cheese. Because their food is made fresh and without preservatives, Germans buy only what they need for a day or two.
My eating habits are defined by what is in the cupboard at the time. I would love to live in Germany because processed food creeps me out. I have developed the bad habit of eating out very frequently so living in Germany would be helpful to me. The daily trip to the grocery store could substitute for my trip to a restaurant. I would fit right in because I love trying new types of cheeses and pairing it with bread and meat. I would probably eat more but it is healthier food so it would not make a difference. I think the rest of my life would be more productive because when your body is healthy and feeling good you are able to get more done.

Essen und Trinken
The majority of differences between U.S and German's eating habits have to do with the way each country lives. America is all about big business. Along one giant business in America is fast food. Our greasy and fattening fast foods are on of the major differences between here and Germany.Germany does have some fast food, but not nearly to the extent that we do. Another major difference is that Americans love buying in bulk. I mean it is everywhere, and along with that comes our giant refrigerators. Germans buy most of their food daily from vendors, bakeries, and butchers. They walk or bike to the stores and can therefore only buy a little bit at a time, usually a days worth.
While differences in fast foods and fridge sizes are important, there are some differences in the actual food we eat. American breakfast may be cereal or pancakes while German's while eat fresh bread with butter and a piece of ham. Lunch is Germany's main dish f the day, similar to our dinner. The will have meat potatoes, bread, vegetables, and fruits like we might do for an American dinner. The typical standard for a U.S lunch includes fast foods and leftovers. German dinners are similar to their breakfast actually. Usually bread and butter. Some cold cuts and different cheeses and a nice glass of beer. Americans save our largest meal for dinnertime. We go all out with meats, noodles, potatoes, vegetables, and more carbohydrates than you can count.

Essen und Trinken
Germany has very different eating habits then the U.S. A typical American breakfast is a sugary cereal or pancakes, while in Germany people typically have fresh bread with cold cut meat slices or different kinds of cheese. One of the biggest differences between German means and American meals is lunch. In the U.S. people tend to have a sandwich or maybe some greasy fast food, while in Germany lunch is the major meal of the day much like our Dinner. And at dinner time they typically have a much smaller meal then our dinner habits here in America.
Germans do not have huge refrigiderators so they typically buy the food they are planning to eat that day fresh and not buying in bulk. Also they do not but a lot of processed foods like hot pockets unlike america. Typical fast food in Germany would be a brot, even though they do have some fast food chains its not as popular as in the U.S.
If i lived in Germany my diet would probably be much more healthy due to the fact that i wouldn't be pillaging the fridge when i get bored and i would eat fresher more natural foods.

In Germany, just like the states, they eat three meals a day. For breakfast they generally have a spread of eggs, bread, cold meat, and cheese. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day. They generally have their hot dish like a casserole. Dinner consists of bread, deli meat, cheese, and sausage. The meals do differ throughout the different regions. In Southwest Germany the food is influenced heavily by the French. Some of their specialities are Riesling wine, spatzle, and sauerkraut. In the state of Bavaria the food is influenced by Austrian cooking. The two most popular foods are dumplings and pretzels. In the Northwest they are very close to the North Sea so they have a large variety of seafood. In Germany never assume you can use a credit card in the stores. Although there are supermarkets in the metro areas generally there is a limited selection of products. However there are separate shops, such as butcher markets and bakeries, to buy certain products.
My current shopping habits are going once a week to the store. My eating habits aren't the best. I try to eat fresh food but that does not always happen because it tends to be more expensive. If I went to Germany I would most certainly try new foods and adapt to their culture of doing things. I think this is the only way to completely soak in the whole experience.

Essen und Trinken
There are many differences between German and American meal habits. It is popular in Germany to eat the biggest meal during lunch, when we would normally eat our biggest meal at dinner. Some popular foods are meat and cheeses, which Americans also eat, just not as much. Shopping is also different in Germany because many people have to walk to the store, so they do not get as much food. This results in having to make more frequent trips than people in America would normally do. They have supermarkets, or smaller shops that specialize in certain things, such as bread or meat.
If I lived in Germany, I think that I would be a healthier person. With all the walking to get food, I would not snack as much. They also seem to have healthier eating habits than Americans do, and I think that I would eat out less than I do now. I would also eat less, because there would not be extra food lying around the house. Overall, I think my life would be very different in Germany because I do not like many German foods, but I would be less picky if I lived there. My eating habits would be completely different than they are now.

Essen und Trinken
If I were to live in Germany I would definitely change my eating habits. I would eat their cuisine which would start out with a breakfast that consists of bread and different meats. This is unusual to me because, other than bacon and sausage, I don't usually eat meat and cheese in the morning. Their breakfast is a lot lighter than what I might be used to. Also, since lunch is their main meal, I would have to get used to that. I think all in all, I would eat less at different meals but about the same at lunch. Another thing that they do differently would be their supermarkets. They have some limits on the variety they carry. However, with breads and meats they have a wider variety.
If I were to live in Germany, I would probably eat out less. Since the meal courses take longer, I would not be used to that. I'm used to how the U.S. restaurants are where you hurry to eat. The full course meals over a couple hours would drive me nuts. Not doing some of these things may save me money or I would get a better workout from having to go to the store more frequently.

Stadt
When it comes to breakfast, the Germans usually start their day with bread and jam, coffee, or maybe a boiled egg. At around noon, they eat lunch, which is their biggest meal of the day. This meal tends to include meat, potatoes, fish, and vegetables. Different from the normal American ways, the Germans have dinner as one of their smaller meals, including cold cuts, bread, butter, and cheese. One of the German specialties includes Kasespatzle: noodles made from wheat flour and egg served with cheese and sometimes onions. Unlike Americans, the Germans do not go out to a supermarket to purchase a whole week's worth of groceries all at once; they go to separate stores for a lot of it. For example, they would go to a bread store to purchase fresh bread for the day, or go to the butcher for meat needed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Most of the food just bought will be cooked for the next meal. A lot of the food in Germany does not have as many preservatives in it like American food, which is why it cannot be stored long and is prepared right away.
If I lived in Germany, I think my eating habits would be quite different. I usually eat cereal for breakfast, so I would probably have to make more time to go buy the fresh bread in order to eat a normal breakfast of bread, jam, and tea or coffee like the Germans. I would also have to get used to eating a bigger lunch as they do because usually my biggest meal is dinner. Getting used to meat and potatoes would not be a problem at all; I like those foods. I would have to learn to go shopping more often, but I would like the fact that I would be eating fresher foods. Overall, I would have to give more thought and planning to my diet just because I would have to go get my food more often, and I would have to get used to not eating quick and easy meals like cereal and granola bars. I would have to take time to prepare my meals because not everything is as easily made or ready-made as is often in America.

Essen und Trinken
I have discovered that the eating habits of Germans are
slightly different than ours in America. The meal times and portions seem to be
distributed differently. They eat a normal breakfast, similar to ours, and then
they used to eat their main meal during our lunch time between 12 and 2 PM but
now the meal is becoming lighter. The dinner course is more specific to eating
a main meal. For regional specialties, the south tends to have an increased
popularity of side dishes. In Germany the efficiency of the shopping process is
essential. They also are not given bags to carry their groceries each trip to
the store, they must purchase their bags which is quite ecologically sound.
Since I attend school every day I have different shopping
and eating habits. For example, I eat a light breakfast in the morning and a hearty
meal at dinner time and I snack throughout the day. As for my shopping, I tend
to shop all at once. When I do go grocery shopping I buy a large quantity of
groceries. If I lived in Germany I would probably go shopping more frequently
because of the fact you have to carry all of your groceries each and every time
you shop. I would also probably eat a larger variety of foods compared to what
I can purchase and keep in my dorm room. I would also probably eat out more
frequently than I do now because I don’t think I’d have spare time to go
shopping. It would probably be more convenient to eat out and cook/prepare fewer
meals.
